Dani Rubin of Pilates Blast- Workout Wednesday

July 29, 2015 by Lottie

_DSC3196I love getting away to Jersey for the summer. Everywhere you turn you see triathletes on their bikes, runners trekking down Ocean Avenue and, of course, the sun is basically always shining. But I was not looking forward to missing my daily burn on the Megaformer, which has helped me come back from multiple injuries and made me a much stronger athlete all around. My friends in Jersey kept telling me about “Pilates Blast,” saying that I had to try it while I was in New Jersey for the summer, plus its just a quick 10 minute drive from my home. I HATE trying new things but I finally jumped the gun and took my first class. My mouth literally dropped when I walked into the studio; I could not believe what I was seeing was actually real. They have three separate rooms which offer three different Pilates inspired classes. The first room is a typical Pilates room with the standard Pilates machine. The next room was the “Cardio” room but this was not your typical cardio. It had jump boards, TRX, wunda chair…all things for getting your heart rate up in a controlled matter. And lastly there was the Megaformer room, offering a high-intensity low-impact strengthening workout that will leave you dripping in sweat.

I had no idea a studio like this existed. It was like Pilates on steroids! It offered everything I ever wanted in a workout – three different and unique workouts to strengthen and condition the body. I had to learn more about the mastermind behind this studio – Dani Rubin After taking her class I was even more impressed. She really teaches you how to engage all the proper muscles by focusing hard on what you are doing. She makes sure your form is on point and you are engaging all the right muscles. With only 6 people in a class you can be sure you will be doing every exercise perfectly and getting a killer workout! I am totally hooked on “Pilates Blast” and excited to feature Dani on my blog today. It is so inspirational to see how this busy studio owner, Mom and amazing athlete does it all!

Dani only recently introduced Pilates Blast, the Megaformer™/ Lagree Fitness™ method, to Monmouth County. Before moving to New Jersey, Dani was based in NYC for 10 years where she had the opportunity to bring the benefits of Pilates to hundreds of students with injuries, chronic issues and various fitness levels. She discovered the profound effects of Pilates after suffering a near career-ending back injury while dancing with the Radio City Rockettes. Her rehabilitation included daily Pilates classes, which not only eliminated her back pain, but also transformed her body and core unlike any other exercise she had ever experienced. Inspired by these results, Dani knew she found her next passion. After discovering MEGAFORMER in 2011 she felt she had no choice but to bring this incredible new machine to Monmouth County!

A day in a life of Dani Rubin:

Wake up 4:56 just before the Alarm at 5:00am

Brush teeth get dressed and out the door by 5:25am

First stop Starbucks: hot venti 7 shots of decaf espresso and a little steamed breve and… And iced decaf coffee to keep me animated throughout my morning classes!IMG_8572
Studio is a 3 minute drive from here!
Morning MEGAFORMER class begins at 6am sharp._DSC31887am: CARDIO PILATES with Nicole – my workout of choice for this Wednesday.PilatesBlastbyChristinaLilly010
The workout:
  • 5 minute plank
  • Followed by squat jumps on the bosu for timed intervals until my legs feel like they can get off the ground.
  • Then hamstring 2 (going up front) on the PILATES wunda chair with mountain climber intervals in between.
  • By now I’m dripping in sweat and the heart rate calorie counter says 350 burned and we are only 1/2 way through class.
  • Next up jump board on the reformer for 12 minutes of different intervals including side lying jumping for the outer glutes and thighs.
  • We end this 45 min workout with our toes in the TRX straps pulling knees, plank to V ups, and mountain climber. FullSizeRenderAfter walking it off and rolling my It band I realize I’m starving.  I grab a handful of grapes and a scoop of almond butter from the fridge.

Here is an inside look into our glamours refrigerator. We like our wine…kidding we had some left over from a night we hosted with Lulu Lemon.IMG_4216 Then to 8am Pilates class! I love my 8am ladies. Loyal and consistent I have taught and observed these women get stronger and more connected week after week.PilatesBlastbyChristinaLilly063
9am time to bust out the iced coffee! Two more classes then lunch;)

Great morning classes but now ravenous after burning over 500 calories in cardio pilates.

My favorite local lunches:
  • “Ocean Cafe“-tofu roll (no noodles)
  • “Mumfords Cafe” -The 3 Grain Salad

And today’s lunch of choice…”Seed to Sprout“! I love the raw pizza and collard wraps!

Back to the studio for some admin work and then home in time to be a mom to my two little campers.

Because I live with one of NJ best home chefs I am very fortunate that healthy options from our garden are often waiting for me when I get home!!
Some standard dinner options on our table are Grilled veggies and shrimp in the summer.FullSizeRender
We roast an entire pan of cauliflower at least once a week in our house! Sometimes it’s an appetizer or on a lazy night sometimes it’s our main course! So easy.

Roasted Cauliflower- cover baking sheet with foil, lay a single layer of cauliflower out on pan. Drizzle with olive oil and fresh herbs of your choice.. We sprinkle with paprika too if no herbs are available. Roast in the oven for about 25 minutes and enjoy this crunchy flavorful filling dish. FullSizeRender
Big leafy green salads are also a favorite especially on evenings there is no time to cook.  I LOVE the taste of good fresh leafy lettuces.. A little olive oil and squeeze of lemon with a few tomatoes and cucumbers, sea salt and pepper is all you need!

Dinner tip: if your eating with less than 3 hours before bedtime, try to eat hydrating food that is at least 90% water based.
Ie: Spinach, lettuce,tomatoes, watermelons,
Cauliflower, cucumbers.image2
Evan my husband makes a ridiculous red sauce that stands alone or we serve over zucchini noodles. This dish totally satisfies  my cravings for Italian food without feeling weighted down with that pizza or pasta feeling 😉

However on this night because we are rushing to a swim meet I’ve order “Wholesome Catering“- a Red Bank based home delivery service preparing home cooked all organic meals.
Organic turkey bolognese over Zucchini noodles. Delivered warm right to my door.
So key for a busy mom/ health conscious eater/business  owner. Healthy delivery options are a life saver! image3
Then it’s off to the swim meet!
I try to get at least 20 more oz of water in tonight before getting home so that I can justify a little dehydration later!

After the long day and kids are in bed…. It’s time to bust out the  Three olives Coconut infused vodka and my homemade seltzer on the back deck to relax and calm the nervous system from all the activity of the day. It’s delicious and refreshing! FullSizeRender
FullSizeRenderIt’s 9:20pm and my brain starts to turn to mush. I chug one more small glass of water before brushing my teeth. On a good night lights out by 10pm!

Dani’s tips:
  • Avoid food out of a box, bag or can!
  • Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate
  • Load up on hydrating foods… Lettuce, spinach, watermelon, tomatoes, cucumbers grapefruit to name a few… When I feel bloated I get back on track by sticking with foods that are at least 90% water based to flush my system. PilatesBlastbyChristinaLilly235

Can you suggest anything we could do at home? I live in a small town with no access to a studio but definitely need this to get back to running! Thanks

Love that you love going to NJ! I’m originally from there and there are so many beautiful areas. I used to love running and cycling on those rolling hills. It was perfect training for me and cannot wait to be back there soon and run those same routes. Love these posts!
