Creamy Nutella Protein Smoothie

July 13, 2017 by Lottie

Smoothies have been favorite treats of mine for as long as I can remember. In the summer when it’s really hot out and I’m coming back from a run I find that my appetite is suppressed by the heat. But knowing that my optimal window of recovery is immediately after my workout, I know that I must get some nutrients into my body without making myself nauseous with heavy food. A smoothie does the trick every time! I usually add protein powder to my smoothies since it ensures that I will have all the essentials after my training. But these days I like to change up my protein sources. So I came up with this protein packed drink that (surprisingly!) contains no protein powder!I added organic tofu because it adds a ton of protein and also creates a silky texture in the smoothie. Tofu has gotten a bad reputation over the years but, in moderation (and if you can tolerate soy products) it’s perfectly fine. Obviously, anything in excess is never good for you. Another inspiration for this smoothie was So Delicious Hazelnut Coconut Milk Coffee Creamer! I love adding a splash into my coffee every now and then. It’s a nice “treat” and is very low in sugar, especially when compared to traditional coffee creamers, which are filled with additives and artificial sweeteners – big NO NOs!Nutella is a classic flavor loved by all and, when translated into a healthy smoothie, equals perfection! This smoothie is not  too heavy and has a nice balance of protein, thanks to the tofu, and carbohydrates, thanks to the banana. It’s also really low in fat. (Keep in mind post workout fat slows down the absorption of your food so avoiding fats post workout will help you better absorb the nutrients in your food right away.)
Don’t love banana? You can omit it and add a few dates for sweetness instead. You can have fun with this recipe and make it your own! But I personally love the combination of hazelnut flavor, chocolate and a creamy silken texture. Wether you’re sipping this post workout or just enjoying it as a morning smoothie, it will be sure to satisfy those sweet cravings and keep you full all morning long!

Recipe:

  • 1 cup nut milk
  • 1/2 cup or 3-4 oz tofu
  • 1 banana or 3 dates
  • 2 tablespoons Hazelnut So Delicious Coconut Milk Coffee Creamer
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons unsweetened coco powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • dash cinnamon
  • ice

In a high speed blender combine all the ingredients. Garnish with your favorite toppings coconut, nuts, chocolate chips….
