DIY Superfood Trail Mix Cereal

November 15, 2015 by Lottie

IMG_6151Cereal…we all love it. It is one of those things that are so addicting its hard not to finish the box in one sitting. Crunchy and sweet with ice cold almond milk and fruit, one of my favorites in the morning. But its safe to say most of the time they are filled with tons of added sugar, overly processed ingredients and little to no fiber.IMG_6143I like using Kamut Puffs or Kashi 7 Grain Cereal. This is straight up puffed grains no other ingredients or added sugars. The only issue is it has pretty much no nutritional value or mush flavor so I find myself adding fruit, nuts, seeds etc…Then I thought why I don’t I combine all my favorite add ins and make my own version of cereal.IMG_6147IMG_6159I love granola added into cereal but yet again can be coated with sugar and lots of other junk. So it hit me! Why don’t I crumble up one of my favorite bars–Fiber d’Lish Orange Cranberry flavor into the cereal mix. This not only adds tons of fiber but flavor as well. The little pieces of the bar in the cereal is like a burst of orange zest so perfect in the morning.IMG_6164IMG_6172I even found myself snacking on this cereal mix, it works as a great trail mix as well. The cereal adds volume to the “trail mix” so you are not over doing your serving of nuts either. You can totally personalize the mix to make it your own use whatever nuts, seeds, dried fruits you like! I am excited to try this with all the other Fiber d’Lish flavors but orange cranberry was screaming morning to me. For all you cereal addicts this is a superfood fiber filled nutrient packed alternative!IMG_6158

Recipe

  • 2 cups puffed grain cereal such as Kamut/Millet/Brown Rice or Kasha 7 Grain Cereal
  • 2 Orange Cranberry Fiber d’Lish Bars— Crumbled up ( I used food processor to get it crumbled)
  • 1/2 cup oats
  • 1/2 cup pumpkin seeds
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened coconut flakes
  • 1/2 cup raisins
  • 2 tablespoons chia seeds

Combine everything in a large mixing bowl. Store in an airtight container.IMG_6200

Any suggestions for a gf bar, instead of the ones listed in the recipe?
