Bethany Lyons Workout Wednesday

May 20, 2015 by Lottie

Screen Shot 2015-05-20 at 9.23.10 AMThis Wednesday I am honored to feature Bethany Lyons a powerful leader, creator, community builder and co-founder of the only Baptiste-style yoga studio in Manhattan: Lyons Den Power Yoga. Bethany is a classically trained ballet dancer, Certified Baptiste Yoga Teacher and Master Instructor at SoulCycle. She has appeared as a yoga and fitness expert on ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, TLC and CNN, and has been featured in Forbes, New York Magazine, US Weekly, SELF, Shape, Fitness Magazine, Vanity Fair, Wall Street Journal and Well+Good, among many other publications. In co-founding Lyons Den Power Yoga, Bethany seeks to showcase the endless possibilities all around us and to show up in a big way for her students and in her life.
NEVER THOUGHT I WOULD BE ABLE TO HOLD THIS POSE! BUT I DID IT AT LYONS DEN!

NEVER THOUGHT I WOULD BE ABLE TO HOLD THIS POSE! BUT I DID IT AT LYONS DEN!

I am by no means a yoga snob; I can barely touch my toes. Needless to say, I was intimidated when I walked into Bethany’s class at Lyons Den Yoga. But throughout the whole class I felt encouraged and motivated. I focused on what I could do and didn’t feel frustrated with what I couldn’t do. The class was super fast-paced and an amazing workout – definitely not your average yoga class. I like to call it  “yoga for New Yorkers.” Bethany’s words inspired me to keep moving and not stop. That became my goal for the class I kept repeating to myself, “Don’t drop your knees…. try the advanced position…” And, in fact, I found that like Bethany, everyone at Lyons Den is so warm and encouraging. The studio is tucked away in the heart of Tribeca and is one of my favorite getaways amidst the hustle and bustle of NYC.

A Day in the life of Bethany Lyons Murray cofounder of Lyons Den Power Yoga

WEDNESDAY

Wake up: 5:50am – right before alarm usually – and then snooze until 6:08am.

I am NOT a typical “fitness morning person” – I am a bonefide night owl, so the morning alarm is NOT my favorite.

I Drink: A 1L bottle of Evian (has more electrolytes than most others & I think it taste better – so it is what we carry at Lyons Den)

6:15am Black Coffee – strong and nothing in it. I am not allowed to have the coffee, until I drink the water.MORNING COFFEEBreakfast is hard for me (not hungry at all in morning – but I know I need energy for my day, so I usually have something light)

6:20am Bowl of strawberries – while checking my playlist & posting on social media outlets – at home and waking up.STRAWBERRIES

6:40am – Eat an EARLY BIRD, “Crack of Dawn” Breakfast Bar (made in Brooklyn) while I am cabbing it to The Den with Josie (my Chi-Weiner Rescue dog and Den Mascot). This bar is made with extra-virgin olive oil, a touch of sea salt and less sugar than your average granola and IT IS THE BOMB.EARLY BIRDTeach yoga . . .

7:00am Power Flow at The Den – sweaty, fiery and so much fun! Packed class that has my day off to a roaring (pun intended) start.

Drink .5L of water.

Quicko-Chango at The Den and then cab it to TriBeCa SoulCycle (I have about 15 minutes to make this transition) to teach an 830am class with a few students who are actually doing a double with me at both studios (this happens often)!

I am a SoulCycle Master Instructor & have been there since the very beginning. I love this community and love still being able to move my students on the bike, on top of being an entrepreneur/yoga studio owner.

LuliTonix Life Tonic with superpowered chia seeds goes into the room with me, & drink 1L of water.

Taught a double at SoulCycle today – so in between – I have a KIND Bar (my go-to)KIND BAR9:30am – second SoulCycle today.

4th bottle of water of day.

Check emails and voicemails.

Call my mom for a quick chat.

Shower.

Drink a LuliTonix GLOW (my favorite green blend of all time – kale, blueberries, awesomeness…) LULITONIXFill up my water bottle and drink another one on my commute to look at a second studio location for Lyons Den. Location undisclosed for now.  WE ARE WORKING ON IT.

Unfortunately, the elevator opens into what what would have been a perfect studio, and it’s a no-go.

Head back to The Den

Approve retail designs that are at the printers.

Work on schedule and answering a few pressing emails.

Eat a Justin’s Maple Almond Butter snack pack (these are incredible if you have never had one) before class so I can chaturanga with the best of them.JUSTINS1:30pm – take a Power Flow class.

My practice. My time. Sweat. Fire. Love.side-plank-absThere is not anything like Baptiste Power Yoga – which is the style of yoga we practice at The Den.

It is physical, moving and empowering like nothing else.

Shower. I use WEN on my hair — it’s the only thing that keeps the tangles out and protects it from the sweat/showering abuse. Mio Double Buff & Quick Start are go-to’s in the shower. Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cleanser (gentle, cleanses without stripping/drying out). Also love ORIGINS Ginger Burst body lotion.

A friend and I go for late lunch at Cookshop (a very belated birthday celebration to be honest)LUNCH WITH LISAWe ordered 6 Blue Point oysters, 4 deviled eggs with sweet and sour onion relishLLUNCH WITH LISA EGGSAnd a ridiculously amazing salad “Fuji Apple Salad”  Sparkling water with lime – I think I drink a large bottle on my own.LUNCH WITH LISA SALADThen home to drop off all my bags.

5:30pm

Walk Josie (she needs her exercise too!) to Chelsea Piers, her favorite spot, from our apartment in Chelsea, on W27th & 8th.JOSIE6:30pm – Jump on the computer to catch up with emails

7:30pm – Snack on a small bowl of kalamata olives (I love any kind of olive and can eat an entire container if not supervised)OLIVES9pm: Out to dinner with my husband.

He works in the restaurant business and more nights than not, if we want to eat together and have any time for ourselves where both of us are not on the computer working – it’s out. I am a pescatarian and he is a vegetarian – so we are always finding great, healthy eats while dining out and love trying new spots.

My meal: I have another amazing salad – arugula, onion and tomato in a light lemon vinaigrette.ARUGULA

Grilled halibut in white wine/herb marinade, burnt green beans and a wedge of lemon. (eat half and bring the rest home for tomorrow)

Mango sorbet (2 scoops!) for dessert because it is finally warm outside and it just looked so good!SORBETWe share a bottle of Pinot Noir. Life is short, drink good wine.VINO

Midnight – Glass of water before bed.

1am – in bed, lights out.

Luckily I get to sleep a little later on Thursdays, so I get a good 7 hours of sleep.

Love when you introduce us to yoga and fitness instructors! It is always fun to learn how there days are just as kookie as mine. And I am also intrigued about their eats, cause it is amazing how differently we all fuel our bodies. It is pretty cool! Thanks for sharing!
